How to make a DIY kids bike basket using a plastic baby wipes container.
On a complete whim, I put together this DIY kids bike basket for four year old K.
See, he really likes to collect rocks and sticks - like a lot of toddlers and preschoolers do! Often, he places them in his pockets or mine, but sometimes, neither of us have pockets and he needs somewhere to put all his little artifacts. He needed a little storage basket of some kind.
So one morning, we were going to go for a bike ride to the pond near our house, but he was being a little resistant to go. Out of the corner of my eye, I spotted an old empty wipes container in our garage and I asked him if he would like to collect treasures in it. Then I thought, "Hey, let's attach it to the handlebars and make a storage basket for your bike!"
K was thrilled with the idea of having his own little basic bike basket to store all his little treasures in.
So my husband eagerly grabbed the drill and some string. Within minutes, K was ready to collect treasures from the pond in his brand new upcycled bike basket.
Now, I know there are lots of different bike basket options out there that you can just buy.
But remember, we made this on a whim as a way to entice a four year old outside. And I think this finished upcycled bike project turned out really cute! Plus, it accomplished our goal of getting him outside. Nothing like a little creativity and a simple DIY project to save the day!
And could something as simple as a homemade treasure basket for his bike possibly lead to some long biking excursions as a family in the future? I doubt it, but time will tell.
Anyway, are you ready to make this hip new bike basket for your kids? Whoa, did I really just say hip? Why yes. Yes I did. I don't even know who I am anymore.
DIY Kids Bike Basket: What You'll Need
Here's what you'll need to make your own DIY upcycled bike basket for kids:
- Drill - a must for many DIY projects!
- String or zip ties - to attach the finished bike basket to the handlebars of the bike
- Kids bike (obviously) - You can also attach the finished basket to balance bikes or even scooters
- Permanent markers, washi tape, stickers, etc. to decorate the container (optional)
How to Make this DIY Bicycle Basket for Kids
On the back of the wipes container, carefully drill four small holes: two on top of each other on each side (see photo below). I say drill carefully because it is very easy to accidentally drill through the front of the wipes container. The size of the holes will depend on the size of the string or zip ties used to secure the container to the bike.Next you need to loop the string or zip tie through the holes and secure the container to the handlebars of the bike.
That's it! It literally takes just a couple of minutes to put this DIY upcycled bike basket together.
Since many plastic wipe containers already have designs on them, you can make your cute bike baskets without much work. For instance, ours already had a lovely Finding Nemo sticker on it. That should tell you how old this container is!
The great thing about this DIY upcycled bike basket is that it can be opened in two ways. Kids can lift the whole lid to insert larger items into their basket...

But if your container is plain, your kid might want to decorate it themselves. A clever bike basket hack like might need a little personalization. Your kid could use permanent markers, stickers, and/or washi tape to decorate it.

Or they can pop open the wipe dispenser part to insert smaller objects. K really loves to push rocks through this small opening. Already this bike basket hack is so much more entertaining than those boring bike baskets you can buy.
