When you have a hyperlexic child, letters, words, and books kind of take over your day-to-day life and house. You'll find ransom style messages on your floor written out with letter magnets. There will be words and phrases written out in the bathtub with foam letters. So it's not surprising that they love word games.

When my son was little, he loved to do these Scrabble math worksheets and these calculator word riddles. After all, they combined his love for letters with his love for numbers. And he'd spend hours doing word searches. Then he moved on to word scrambles.

For some people, word games in general are simply fun to play. For instance, I love word games of all kinds and always have. Too bad no one will play Scrabble with me any more though... 

Hyperlexic kids also generally love word games because it builds off of their interests in print material, letters, and languages. But you can also combine those common hyperlexic interests with their individual special interests in topics such as calendars, video games, weather, Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, or whatever else they're into these days.

But there are plenty of benefits of playing word scramble games for everyone, hyperlexic or not. Not only are word scrambles fun to do, they can be used to:

  • Introduce, review, and build vocabulary
  • Improve spelling
  • Practice problem solving skills
  • Teach patience and persistence
  • Develop cognitive and executive functioning skills
  • Boost memory
  • Improve working memory
  • Improve concentration and focus
  • Build social skills through team building, bonding with other people, etc.
  • Practice self-regulation (aka they're therapeutic and great for relaxing and decompressing)

There are a few different ways you can use these printable word scramble games. Here are some suggestions to try:

  • Laminate them and pair them with a dry erase marker so you can reuse them again and again
  • Use them in teletherapy - Simply screenshare the PDF and type directly on it during your Zoom session.
  • Put them into a binder to create an activity book for road trips, appointments, special occasions, etc.
  • Pair the printable with letter manipulatives of some kind and let your child rearrange the physical letters so it's easier to visualize the word
  • Use them as part of a classroom learning center
